If you've sailed Royal Caribbean or Carnival and you're looking at an MSC fare that's hundreds of dollars cheaper, the question is whether the savings hold up once you're on board. Some costs work the same way on all three lines. A few work differently enough to surprise a first-time MSC cruiser, and the surprises come out of your onboard bill. This guide covers what changes in your budget, your dinner plans and the mood on board, with 2026 prices, so you can tell whether MSC fits the way you like to cruise.

What costs the same and what doesn't

Start with the charges every guest pays. These are the published rates as of October 2026.

MSCRoyal CaribbeanCarnival
Daily service charge, regular cabin$17$18.50$17
Daily service charge, suite$23 (Yacht Club)$21$19
Service charge on drink packagesIncluded in the price20% added20% added
Free water at dinnerBuffet dispensers onlyYesYes

The daily service charge is close to a wash. MSC raised its North America rate to $17 per person per day on May 11, 2026, and Carnival raised its rate to $17 in April. Royal Caribbean charges $18.50. On a 7-night cruise for two, the gap between MSC and Royal is $21.

The last two rows are where the real money is.

Drink packages: compare the total, not the daily price

Royal Caribbean adds a 20% gratuity to beverage packages, and Carnival adds a 20% service charge. Carnival's CHEERS package was $69.95 per person per day bought before the cruise and $74.95 bought on board, before that 20%. Carnival says it's moving its drink packages to prices that vary by sailing starting December 1, 2026, so expect those numbers to change.

MSC builds the gratuity into its package price. In the U.S. in 2026, MSC sells three packages: Premium Extra (with alcohol), Alcohol-Free, and a Minors package. The older Easy packages are no longer sold for new bookings. Every guest in the same cabin has to buy the same package, and Premium Extra has a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hours. On two 7-night MSC Seashore sailings priced in October 2026, MSC's drinks-and-Wi-Fi bundle added $392 per person to the fare.

Compare final totals. A package that looks cheaper per day on another line can cost about the same once the 20% is added. The drink package calculator works out whether a package pays off for how much you actually drink.

Water is the surprise

On Royal Caribbean and Carnival, water at dinner is free. On MSC, free water comes from the dispensers at the buffet. In the main restaurants, water is served in bottles, and it costs extra unless you have a drink package. MSC's own water, called AQUA by MSC, is included in every drink package, and Yacht Club guests get it everywhere.

It's a small charge and an easy one to avoid. Fill a refillable bottle at the buffet before dinner, or count bottled water in your budget.

Dinner works on a schedule

Royal Caribbean and Carnival guests are used to choosing between a set dinner time and a flexible one. On MSC, most guests get a set time. Bella and Fantastica guests choose one of up to three fixed seatings and keep the same table and time all week. Fantastica guests can request their preferred seating, subject to availability.

There are two ways around the fixed schedule. Aurea guests get My Choice dining, so they eat whenever they want in a dedicated area during opening hours. And on MSC Seashore and MSC Seaside, Bella and Fantastica guests can choose Dine on Your Time, which is first come, first served, so expect a wait at peak hours.

The MSC experiences guide shows what each level costs and includes.

The mood on board

MSC differs most from Carnival here. Carnival builds its reputation on fun and a lively crowd. MSC's ships are big, modern and polished, and the busy pool decks, bars and nightlife are there if you want them. You can also spend a whole week away from them. A big MSC ship has room for a loud pool party at one end and a quiet afternoon with a book at the other, and nobody expects you to choose the party.

MSC is a European line with a multilingual crew. On European sailings especially, you'll hear more languages around you than you would on a Royal or Carnival week out of Florida.

Private islands

All three lines have their own island in the Bahamas. Royal Caribbean has Perfect Day at CocoCay. Carnival opened Celebration Key on Grand Bahama on July 19, 2025. MSC has Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, and many MSC Caribbean itineraries from Florida call there. On a 7-night MSC Seashore itinerary from Port Canaveral checked in October 2026, MSC listed a full day docked at Ocean Cay, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If the private island is the main reason you book, compare what each island includes and what costs extra on your specific sailing.

Your status from Royal or Carnival still counts

MSC's status match program accepts loyalty status from other cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival, and from major hotel programs. A match can get you MSC Voyagers Club perks on your first sailing instead of starting from zero. Enrollment is free. The MSC status match guide explains how to apply and when to time it.

Who should switch, and who shouldn't

MSC is worth trying if:

  • A lower fare matters and you're willing to plan around a few onboard charges.
  • You want a calm week on a big, modern ship, with the nightlife there when you want it.
  • You like a more elegant feel at dinner and don't mind a set time, or you'll book Aurea or sail Seashore or Seaside to avoid one.
  • You have loyalty status elsewhere that can transfer through the status match.

You may be happier staying where you are if:

  • The party atmosphere is the point of your cruise.
  • Flexible dinner times matter to you and you don't want to pay for Aurea.
  • You expect everything at dinner, including water, to be included.

Variables that change the answer

  • Fares move. MSC's lower fares are the reason most people look. Price the same week on all three lines, including service charges and a drink package if you'll buy one.
  • Prices change during the year. All three lines raised service charges in the past three years, and Carnival's drink package pricing changes on December 1, 2026.
  • Your ship matters. Dining options, Yacht Club layout and entertainment vary a lot between MSC's ship classes. The MSC ship classes guide explains the differences.
  • Season matters too. Holiday weeks and school breaks bring more families and a busier ship on every line.

FAQ

Is MSC cheaper than Royal Caribbean and Carnival?

The base fare often is, and that's why many Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruisers look at MSC in the first place. The daily service charge isn't much different. As of October 2026, MSC charges $17 per person per day in regular cabins, Carnival charges $17 and Royal Caribbean charges $18.50. The total depends on what you add. MSC includes the gratuity in its drink package prices, while Royal and Carnival add 20% to theirs. MSC charges for water at the table in its main restaurants unless you have a package, and the other two don't. Price the same week on each line, including service charges, the drink package you'd buy and any specialty dining, and compare the totals for the whole cruise.

Is water free on MSC Cruises?

Some of it is. Free purified water is available from dispensers at the buffet. In the main restaurants, water is served in bottles, and it costs extra unless you have a drink package. Every MSC drink package includes MSC's own still and sparkling water, called AQUA by MSC, and Yacht Club guests get it in every location on the ship. This is the charge that surprises Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruisers most, because both of those lines serve water free at dinner. The easy fix is to bring a refillable bottle and fill it at the buffet before dinner. If you're buying a drink package anyway, water is covered and you won't need to think about it.

Do MSC drink packages include gratuities?

Yes. MSC builds the service charge into the price of its drink packages, so you don't pay a separate percentage on top. Royal Caribbean adds a 20% gratuity to beverage packages, and Carnival adds a 20% service charge to CHEERS. That's why comparing daily package prices across lines can mislead you. In the U.S. in 2026, MSC sells Premium Extra, Alcohol-Free and Minors packages, and the older Easy packages are no longer sold for new bookings. Everyone in the same cabin has to buy the same package. Premium Extra allows up to 15 alcoholic drinks in a 24-hour period, and drinks past that are charged at menu prices. Packages bought with your cruise are discounted compared with onboard prices.

Will MSC match my Royal Caribbean or Carnival status?

MSC runs a status match program that accepts loyalty status from other cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival, and from major hotel programs such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and IHG. You apply online with your membership details and a photo or scan of your loyalty card, and MSC contacts you once your match is approved. A match places you in an MSC Voyagers Club tier, which can bring perks and discounts on your first MSC sailing instead of starting at the bottom. Enrollment is free. Check the current terms on MSC's status match page before you apply. The MSC status match guide covers the details, including how to time your application before your cruise.

Is MSC a party cruise line like Carnival?

Only if you want it to be. MSC's ships have busy pool decks, bars and late-night entertainment for guests who want them. The difference is that the ships are big enough, and the onboard style polished enough, that you can also spend a quiet, relaxing week without feeling out of place. MSC runs Broadway-style theater shows, and most guests eat dinner in the main dining room at a set time. Guests who want even more distance from the crowds can book Aurea for adults-only spa access or the Yacht Club for a private area of the ship. If you want the party, it's there. If you'd rather skip it, MSC makes that easy.

The bottom line

Price your preferred week on MSC, Royal Caribbean and Carnival with the service charges and the drink package you'd actually buy, then compare the totals. If MSC still comes out ahead, plan around the water and the dinner schedule, apply for a status match before you sail, and read the MSC experiences guide to decide whether Fantastica's cabin choice is worth the small upgrade.
