MSC Alaska Cruise 2027: How to Plan Around the Glacier Day on MSC Poesia

In this guide
If you're pricing an MSC Alaska cruise for 2027, the decision in front of you is how much weight to put on the glacier morning printed in your itinerary. MSC Poesia's first season in 2026 delivered most of what it promised, but the fjord on the original brochures never happened, and the replacement fjord dropped off the last three sailings. The 2027 listings still name Tracy Arm. A good week is still easy to plan around that uncertainty once you know what the schedule says, what changed on the water in 2026, and which days carry the risk.

The 2027 MSC Poesia Alaska season at a glance
MSC Poesia is MSC's only Alaska ship. It sails seven-night round trips from Seattle's Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 every Monday, and the 2027 Alaska departures run from April 26 through September 20.
| Item | 2026 (sailed) | 2027 (on sale as of October 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Ship | MSC Poesia | MSC Poesia |
| Homeport | Seattle, Pier 91 | Seattle, Pier 91 |
| First seven-night sailing | May 11 | April 26 |
| Last seven-night sailing | September 21 | September 20 |
| Ports | Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point (Sitka on some weeks), Juneau, Victoria | Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Victoria |
| Scenic cruising | Tracy Arm on early brochures; sailed Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier | Tracy Arm listed |
The season starts about two weeks earlier than 2026 did, so the first sailings fall in late April and early May. If whales are a priority, check each tour's season before you book: one Juneau whale operator on Viator guarantees sightings only from May 15 to September 15. Sitka appeared on some 2026 sailings, but none of the 2027 listings checked for this article include it, so confirm the ports on your own booking. MSC has also scheduled a third season for 2028, from April 24 through September 18.

What happened to Tracy Arm in 2026
Early on August 10, 2025, a landslide fell into Tracy Arm, the fjord that leads to the Sawyer Glaciers. The U.S. Geological Survey and a team of researchers later documented a tsunami runup of 481 meters (about 1,578 feet) on the opposite wall. No cruise ship was in the fjord at that hour.
For 2026, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Holland America and Virgin Voyages all replaced Tracy Arm with Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. On Poesia, the fjord came first thing in the morning, around 7 a.m., and Juneau followed from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. How close the ship gets to the glacier face is up to the captain and the ice on the day.
The September change
MSC dropped Endicott Arm from the September 7, 14 and 21 sailings, citing seasonal operational considerations. Press and passenger reports pointed to short mornings and fog: the fjord transit has to finish before a same-day Juneau call, and by mid-September sunrise there is around 6:30 a.m. The ship reached Juneau at 8 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. and kept its 10 p.m. departure, which added about six hours ashore. One report says MSC also gave onboard credit on the final sailing, so credit is possible if this happens again, but nothing guarantees it. The change touched three of the season's twenty sailings.
Will Tracy Arm be back for 2027?
Nobody knows yet. MSC's 2027 listings still show Tracy Arm Fjord, as they did when sales opened in October 2025, and the rest of the industry is split. Virgin Voyages has told guests it is moving 13 of Brilliant Lady's 2027 sailings to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier because of continued landslide risk, while Royal Caribbean's website still lists a Tracy Arm visit on a September 2027 Serenade of the Seas sailing.
Read the glacier line on your 2027 confirmation as a placeholder. Expect one of three outcomes:
| Glacier day outcome | What you get | When it's most likely |
|---|---|---|
| Tracy Arm and the Sawyer Glaciers | The fjord in the brochure | Only if lines judge the slope safe before the season |
| Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier | What most of the 2026 season sailed | The default if Tracy Arm stays closed |
| No fjord, long Juneau day | About six extra hours in Juneau (8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in 2026) | Late season, when morning light gets short |
That late-season pattern comes from one year of data, and MSC hasn't stated it as a rule.
How to plan your 2027 week
The loop is a sea day north, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, the glacier morning with Juneau the same day, a sea day south, Victoria in the evening, and Seattle the next morning.
Build your timing from all-aboard
These are the 2026 published times for Poesia's Alaska calls. Port times for 2027 may shift, so check your own itinerary.
| Port | 2026 arrival | 2026 departure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ketchikan | 7 a.m. | 5 p.m. | Docked, full day |
| Icy Strait Point | 10 a.m. | 7 p.m. | Most of a day |
| Glacier fjord | About 7 a.m. | About 8:30 a.m. | Scenic cruising only |
| Juneau (standard) | 2 p.m. | 10 p.m. | Afternoon and evening |
| Juneau (no fjord) | 8 a.m. | 10 p.m. | The long day |
| Victoria | 8 p.m. | Late evening | Evening walk |
All-aboard comes before departure and is printed in the MSC for Me app and the daily program. Plan to be back at the ship at least one hour before all-aboard. That buffer is this site's planning rule, not an MSC requirement. Viator's Worry-Free Shore Excursion terms add their own: at least two hours between a tour's end and the ship's departure. None of the four tours below carries Viator's Worry-Free tag, so getting you back to the ship on time is up to each operator, which makes the one-hour buffer more important. Alaska ports run on Alaska time, one hour behind Seattle, so check whether the ship's clock has changed and which clock your phone shows. Tours run on local time; all-aboard is ship time. In Juneau, MSC doesn't always get a dock, and Cruise Critic reports that tendering is possible, which adds time at both ends.
Ketchikan: a full docked day
Ketchikan has the most room in the week, and the Misty Fjords floatplane is the classic splurge: Misty Fjords Floatplane Flightseeing Tour (affiliate link). It takes about two hours, starts at the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau on Front Street, and suits anyone who wants fjord scenery without a hike. Floatplanes cancel for low cloud, and this operator has a 300-pound weight limit. Book a morning slot so a weather delay can slide to later in the day.
Icy Strait Point: whale watching from Hoonah
Icy Strait Point is an Alaska Native-owned cruise destination about a mile from Hoonah, and the nine-hour call leaves room for one big tour and a walk. Whale watching fits best: Hoonah Whale-Watching Cruise near Icy Strait Point (affiliate link). It's a three-hour small-group boat trip with heated cabins, and you check in at the Excursion Hub, a walk of about 10 minutes from the dock. The operator says the whales arrive in May, which matters for the April 26 and May 3 sailings. The port area has no cell service or Wi-Fi, so save your confirmation offline.
Juneau: plan for both versions of the day
On a standard week, you get off the ship around 2:30 p.m. and have roughly five to six usable hours once you leave an hour before all-aboard. That's one main tour plus a walk downtown. A whale watch fits: Ultimate Juneau Whale Watch (affiliate link). It runs three hours with about two on the water, meets under the Mount Roberts Tramway cables, and has 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. check-ins that suit an afternoon arrival.
On the long Juneau day, add a second tour on the ice side: Taku Lodge Feast & 5-Glacier Seaplane Discovery (affiliate link). Viator lists it at about three and a half hours, including a check-in 30 minutes before the flight at 2 Marine Way downtown. A 25-minute seaplane flight passes five glaciers, including the Taku, then you get about two hours at the remote Taku Glacier Lodge with a salmon meal and a chance of seeing black bears. The operator rates it easy for most fitness levels, with a 300-pound weight limit. Like any floatplane trip, it depends on the weather. On a standard afternoon you could pick it instead of the whale watch, but fitting both into five or six hours doesn't work. Helicopter glacier landings are the other big Juneau splurge; compare each operator's time on the ice against your window.
Victoria, at 8 p.m., is a harbor walk and little else. Save your excursion budget for Alaska.
FAQ
Does MSC Poesia go to Tracy Arm in 2027?
MSC's 2027 itineraries list Tracy Arm Fjord. Those listings went on sale in October 2025, two months after the landslide, and MSC later skipped Tracy Arm for all of 2026. As of mid-October 2026, MSC hadn't said publicly whether ships will return in 2027. Other lines are split: Virgin Voyages has moved 13 of its 2027 sailings to Endicott Arm, while Royal Caribbean still shows Tracy Arm on at least one September 2027 sailing. The realistic expectation is Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier unless MSC confirms otherwise, with some chance of Tracy Arm if conditions are judged safe. Watch for itinerary change emails in the months before you sail, and check the scenic cruising line in the MSC for Me app close to departure.
What is the difference between Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm?
They are neighboring fjords south of Juneau that share an entrance at Holkham Bay. Tracy Arm leads to the North and South Sawyer Glaciers. Endicott Arm, about 20 miles to the south, leads to Dawes Glacier. Both have steep walls, waterfalls and floating ice, and cruise lines have long used Endicott Arm as the alternate when ice made Tracy Arm hard to navigate. In 2026 every major line that skipped Tracy Arm went to Endicott Arm instead. On the day itself, ice, fog and the captain's judgment decide how far in the ship goes and how close it gets to the glacier face. Either way, you spend the morning on deck and don't go ashore.
When does MSC's 2027 Alaska season start and end?
The first seven-night Alaska sailing leaves Seattle on Monday, April 26, 2027, and the last leaves on Monday, September 20, 2027. Before the season, MSC Poesia repositions from Miami to Seattle on an 18-night Panama Canal cruise departing April 8, 2027. After the final Alaska week, it sails one way from Seattle on September 27, 2027, back toward Miami for the Caribbean winter. MSC has also scheduled a 2028 Alaska season from April 24 through September 18. These dates come from MSC's announcements and sailing listings as of October 2026, and schedules can still change, so confirm your exact sailing when you book.
What happens if MSC cancels the glacier cruising day?
When MSC removed Endicott Arm from the September 7, 14 and 21, 2026 sailings, it notified guests ahead of time and moved the Juneau arrival from 2 p.m. to 8 a.m., keeping the 10 p.m. departure. That added about six hours ashore. One report says MSC gave onboard credit on the final sailing, so credit is possible, but MSC hasn't promised it for future changes. Cruise contracts generally let lines change itineraries for safety and operational reasons, and compensation is up to the line. If your scenic cruising is canceled, check whether your Juneau tours still fit the new times, and contact whoever you booked through right away to move or add a tour. A long Juneau day has room for two excursions.
Can I book Alaska shore excursions independently on an MSC cruise?
Yes. You can book through MSC, directly with local operators, or through a site like Viator. Tours sold by the ship carry the cruise line's own return-to-ship protection. Independent tours don't, so if one runs late, the ship can leave without you. Viator's Worry-Free Shore Excursions come with a Back to Ship Guarantee: if the supplier doesn't get you back in time through no fault of your own, Viator arranges transport to the next port, up to US$1,000 per person. You must give correct ship times and leave at least two hours between the tour's end and departure. If your ship misses the port, you can request a refund within 14 days. Read Viator's terms and look for the Worry-Free tag on each product.
The bottom line
The 2027 MSC Poesia Alaska season is the same week as 2026 with one open question: which fjord, if any, you'll see. Book the week for the whole loop, choose May through August if the glacier morning is the priority, and plan Juneau twice, once as a one-tour afternoon and once as a two-tour long day. After you book, check your itinerary in the MSC for Me app about 30 days before departure, then lock in the tours that fit the times it shows.
